Summary

According to The Department for Children, Schools and Families only 35% of five-year-olds in the most deprived areas of the UK reach the expected level of attainment, compared to 51% of pupils in other areas. The Latin Programme is passionate about reversing this trend. Working with inner-city schools, we use Latin as tool for increasing English literacy. Our unique approach has proven effective in raising students' levels of academic achievement which, in turn, improves their life chances.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

One in six people in the UK struggles with a literacy level below that expected of an eleven-year-old. This under-achievement is particularly evident among those who face multiple barriers, such as youngsters from low-income families and certain ethnic groups, as well as looked-after children. Research indicates that people who experience early literacy failure are more likely to face later social exclusion.

How will this project solve this problem?

We are committed to finding innovative ways to help children facing multiple barriers achieve improved literacy, thereby enhancing their life prospects. The Latin Programme sends highly trained teachers into under-achieving state primary schools to work with children in Years 3-6 to improve their literacy. We teach Latin through English, and English through Latin. Our pioneering approach has proven results: after a single year, 88% of our students progress by more than one level in Literacy.

Potential Long Term Impact

Literacy allows students to expand their general knowledge, it contributes to a better understanding of other cultures, enhances community participation and stimulates insight into human nature and decision-making. By offering children who face multiple barriers the opportunity to increase and solidify their literacy skills, we not only improve the likelihood of their educational success, but increase their overall life chances.
