Summary

The project will create a brick-making business in the community of Bergnek providing 10 full-time jobs. The bricks will be sold to building wholesalers to generate income as well as provide the bricks to build the homes desperately needed in the community and to build a small health care facility that will be used by surrounding communities as well as the residents of Bergnek.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

There are 3,500 people in this community who arrived here in 1997 after being evicted from farms under the Land Reform Act. The community was reallocated to this remote location which is about 45kms (28miles) from the nearest town, making it hard to access jobs and resources and has extreme unemployment, food shortages. Over and above this they are short about 250 houses to adequately house the community as well as a having no facility to support basic health care needs.

How will this project solve this problem?

The making of these bricks will provide much needed employment. From the income the business will also produce bricks to build the houses the community needs at a significantly lower cost than what has been proposed by the regional government for the houses to be built. Not only that, but the houses will be built using clay bricks which provide better insulation and weather resistance. The income from the business will also go to support building the space for a permanent clinic in the community

Potential Long Term Impact

The potential long-tem impact of the project is to enable the village to become sustainable through their own efforts because they will own and operate the businesses that come out of the project thereby providing much needed long-term employment and sources of income.
