Help provide adult literacy courses in the Gambia

We are pleased to announce that a Trial Adult Literacy Course is to take place in Seno Bajonki, one of the remote villages in Jarra West District of The Gambia, West Africa for 30 illiterate adults, 15 men and 15 women.

There are many more in the village that have already come forward wanting to learn to read and write so it has been necessary to do a lottery for both the men and the women, as this would seem the fairest way of deciding who should take part in the trial.

The reason for picking the village is that the villagers have already shown great enthusiasm and dedication to the proposed Adult Literacy Project by trying to raise some money themselves to help provide an area for the classes to take place. This despite their desperate poverty. This shows how much adults who are illiterate want to learn to read and write. In learning to do so they can provide better for their families and hopefully afford to send their own children to school so that they do not also grow up illiterate and unable to find employment.

We are hopeful that the Trial will be able to commence as soon as possible enabling at least a few to learn to read and write. The demand however is too high for us to provide for on our own but it is a start and will enable us to iron out any matters that might need addressing before the main project.

We will keep you all updated.

Thanks to all.
