Rebuild Flooded Burma Refugee Camp Recovery Centre

The Thai floods of 2011 started in the north of Thailand, where DARE Network works in 5 Burmese Refugee camps on the Thai/Burma Border. During this rainy season our DARE Centre buildings were badly damaged. We have already rebuilt 1 Centre but need your help with 4 more. DARE (Drug and Alcohol Recovery and Education) Network provides highly successful community-based prevention education and non-medical culturally appropriate addiction treatment to the communities of 150,000 Burmese Refugees.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Burmese Refugee camps flooded and DARE Centres damaged. For over 30 years the ethnic people of Burma have been fleeing systematic destruction of their homeland, security, livelihoods, culture and freedom by the Military Regime of Burma. Running from forced labor, rape, landmines and murder, 150,000 people have ended up in Refugee camps on the Thai/Burma Border. Here they are prevented from working or leaving the camps. Trauma and loss have led to depression, addiction and community violence.

How will this project solve this problem?

DARE Network for the last 10 years has provided Community-Based Prevention Education and culturally appropriate non-medical Addiction Treatment in 5 Burmese refugee camps on the Thai/Burma border. Our programs reach deeply into the refugee communities to provide support to leadership, youth, families and addicts. Our treatment outcomes are steady at 69% non-relapse more than twice Western programs. We need our damaged DARE Centres restored to the community. We have rebuilt 1 but need 4 more.

Potential Long Term Impact

As DARE continues to support the prevention and recovery needs, the communities are owning their own programs. Ensuring they continue to have a place to practice what they have learned and share their skills with others is essential. All natural disasters and weather set people back, but the knowledge and skills remain. DARE Network programs operate on every level at grassroots. These roots are deep and can overcome the physical setback with a little help from you one DARE Centre at a time.
