Sensitizing 170 Gulu Women/men on Family Planning

Sensitizing women and men including the youth on better family planning project will reach out to twenty-eight rural villages. The project involves the sensitizing and training of women and men on better family planning practices, such as safer birth control methods, spacing births, reducing HIV/AIDS through the use of condoms. The program involves training local healthcare workers and laypersons to outreach the community. Recipients receive family planning birth control options and training.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

While the knowledge of contraceptives and family planning practices is good in many parts of Uganda, knowledge of family planning remains poor in the North, particularly in rural settings. Rural persons are three times less likely to use condoms in comparison with their urban counterparts. The average number of births per Ugandan woman is 6.6 and many women have pregnancies closer together than they would prefer. Many young girls experience unwanted pregnancies leading to unsafe abortions.

How will this project solve this problem?

This project will provide one all day family planning outreach for each of 28 rural villages. Trained health care workers will sensitize and educate women and men on better family planning and safer sex practices such as delaying the age of first birth, spacing births, using safer birth control methods, prevention of HIV/AIDS through condom use and having fewer children. The health care staff will also provide family planning services such as contraceptive provision and HIV/AIDS testing.

Potential Long Term Impact

Through sensitization and education on better family planning, this project seeks to empower women and men to take increasing control of their reproductive health. This project aims to prevent the unnecessary deaths of children and mothers by educating woman on the importance of delaying the age of their first pregnancy and spacing births. Sensitization will also prevent unwanted pregnancies and the spread of HIV/AIDS and STIs through the encouragement of contraceptive and condom use.
