Motivating action worldwide, Green Map System is fueled by a remarkably diverse movement of local mapmakers who research, chart and promote their communities' sustainable living resources as well as its ecological, cultural and social justice sites. Through a locally-led process, we are building capacity in 65 countries. Now, as the urgency of climate change grows, we are 'going open' to help ensure that even more cities, towns and partnerships benefit from our icons and engagement resources.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Too many people feel bewildered by ecological decline and climate change's complexities because they lack awareness of local resources and connections to make meaningful change. To encourage daily actions that support vibrant economies and thriving communities, our participatory tools and mapping technologies help local project leaders bring everyday solutions to light. As a result, across the US and worldwide, award-winning Green Maps highlight local places, pathways, people and resources.
How will this project solve this problem?
An antidote to despair and apathy, Green Map gives people a new perspective on their own hometown's assets and challenges. Guiding the way to better choices, each edition - whether made by city officials, nonprofits, youth or everyday citizens - is a powerful platform for social change. With the launch of our new website and open toolkit in spring 2017, this expanding movement will build capacity, skills and collaboration for a more resilient, healthy, democratic and economically sound world.
Potential Long Term Impact
Moving from copyright to 'copy-left', we will combine our efforts with diverse 'smart cities' programs, mapping technologies, media, educators and others. Directly countering climate change, your support will accelerate our ability to build skills, networks and resources, enabling local Green Map teams to undertake a wider variety of community-building and sustainability initiatives. This will extend our impacts, yielding powerful new print & interactive Green Maps that help millions of people.
