Every charity has to start somewhere. Skills and knowledge required to start and run a charity are diverse and often inaccessible. So in 2007 Patrick Cox, our Founder, had a simple but exceptional idea- a Small Charities Coalition to share skills and resources between charities through collaboration and partnerships. We have now facilitated 352 supporter-small charity matches, free training, a helpline and online resources. But we've only just begun. Support 7,190 small charities today.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Charities with an annual income of under 100k form 75% of the sector, yet only receive 3.5% of available funding. The staff, services and resources of the UK's small charities are stretched as never before due to funding cuts and increased demand for services. Small charities, often staffed solely by volunteers, respond professionally and innovatively to local need. However, with limited funding and resources many of these charities need free or affordable help to start up, stay up and keep up.
How will this project solve this problem?
Often staff and trustees are sole workers with limited time, resources and experience in specific areas of running a charity. So we provide a highly tailored skills matching service where experienced staff from charities and businesses mentor and work with an individual from a small charity to share knowledge, experience and skills for free. Plus, we offer training, online resources, a telephone helpline, trustee recruitment assistance and a monthly customised small charities e-bulletin.
Potential Long Term Impact
This year your donation will help deliver 80 matches for small charities across the UK providing invaluable free advice and mentoring. You will also help enable 3 Trustee Speed-Recruiting events, free and affordable training on governance and fundraising and the consolidation of our extensive bank of freely available online resources for anyone in the sector. Together, we will empower our members to develop their skills so that their charity has the capacity for sustainability in the future.
