Celebrations are an important part of life in Zambia, as they are throughout the world. This year, thanks to a small donation from one of the HANDS AROUND THE WORLD sponsors, the school was able to enjoy a special party to mark World Youth Day. 240 of the students attended this event which was marked with lots of singing,...

The new school year is about to begin. In Zambia they are in the middle of the Rainy Season and these days the weather is unpredictable. As in many parts of the world, now the rain, when it comes, is heavier and more persistent than usual. As yet the flooding around Monze is under control although the rain has been very...

Today I had a wonderful time back at school! I attended classes from grade1 to grade 7 at PIZZ school with the sole exception of grade 3 where a new teacher is awaited.
I was very impressed by the way in which the lessons were conducted. The limited number of textbooks means that much of the work is done using the...

Mrs Sianga writes:
"The school opened on 2nd January 2012 for the first term and 30th April for the second term. When the school opened in January, we had 214 pupils altogether both lower and upper basic; we also have seven teachers and one general worker at the old school and five upper basic teachers with two general...

It is heartening to hear how well the students are doing despite all the difficulties they face. The school playing field is in very regular use for football games – formal and informal, with some of the local youth enjoying the facilities with the students. The girls join in the football as well as playing netball....

When the news of the damaged roof was announced we received a very generous and rapid response. This enabled us to send out funds to replace the missing roofing sheets and repair the damage. As a result the students were able to continue with their studies and take their grade 8 and grade 9 examinations.
The results...

I visited Monze this year between June and the end of August.
Progress has been made during the past year particularly thanks to support through GlobalGiving and other donations linked to past volunteers.
Books have been bought – particularly for grade 8 and 9 students. These books are expensive (on average...

Dear friends,
A tornado (or something very similar) has struck Mrs. Sianga's new school!
Although fortunately no-one was hurt, the damage is quite severe as you can see on the attached photos (sorry for the poor quality of the pictures), with the roof virtually all blown off.
Mrs. Sianga writes: "The incident...

I talked to Mrs. Sianga about how she wanted to use the money recently received through Global Giving.
She would like to feed the children – about 1.8m Kwatcha (£240 or $387) for three months.
She needs a strong room so that they can use the school as an examination centre saving the costs and disruption...

Looking after children is never easy and all the more difficult when funds are very tight. Mrs Sianga, who has almost 500 children dependent on her and her work, is an inspiration!
The recent Global Giving challenge has been a huge boost to funds to help her work and several of us plan to visit in June, partly to...
