The Back-Up Trust runs services to help people under the age of 18 with a spinal cord injury develop a confident and independent lifestyle and get the support they need to fulfill their potential
Over 50 people under the age of 18 suffer from a spinal cord injury in the UK every year. Children with a spinal cord injury are less likely to live independently and get married when they grow up. Depression and isolation are common. People with spinal cord injury are over 5 times as likely to attempt suicide as the overall average. Back-Up reaches out to all people under the age of 18 who have suffered from a spinal cord injury to help them develop an independent and confident lifestyle.
The Back-Up Trust is the only charity in the UK providing U-18 services for people with a spinal cord injury. We provide services mentoring, wheelchair skills training, activity courses, a schools project, and an outreach programme.
We aim to be a vital part of the coping process for all children who suffer from a spinal cord injury in the UK. The confidence that the children gain from our services positively affect not only them but their family, friends, and community.
"The Back-Up course seemed to change me and my whole view of life completely. and you don't even realize properly how much you have changed and how much your confidence has grown until you get home!" - Laura May, Under-18 Course Participant
