Childreach International is training midwives to keep over 4000 children happy and healthy in rural Cambodia. We're reversing the impacts of poor maternal and infant health care in Cambodia, which sees over 40,000 children die each year before their fifth birthday. Our impacts are far reaching, working to reduce the global shortage of midwives as well as driving down the unnecessary deaths caused by poor maternal and infant health care in Cambodia's Prumbymon Commune in the Takeo Province.
Maternal health is particularly at threat in Cambodia's rural areas, where long and difficult journeys make it hard for expectant mothers to reach hospitals. This has implications on the birthing stages - only 68% of women have access to a skilled attendant - and the antenatal care, with only 69% of women receiving care during pregnancy. The lack of essential maternal care is having significant impact on mothers and infants' wellbeing - 110 children die each day, mostly from preventable causes.
Essential training and the means to travel to rural communities will help midwives provide vital maternal healthcare to mothers and their infants. The project will reduce the mortality rate by 15% in the Prumbymon Commune and the surrounding villages, supporting families who would otherwise lack the life saving medical attention needed during pre and post pregnancy.
Midwives will be supplied with training materials used to educate women and families in hard to reach communities, raising awareness about the importance of maternal and child health care, so that families can support expectant mothers, and mothers can safely support their children long after birth.
"It is important mothers do not die so they can look after their children, I will go to the village to teach them about the dangerous signs". - Chong Nai Hy, A Midwife deep in the rural communities
