Summary

Azafady is asking for donations to support a community in Madagascar to repair their school for students aged 7 - 16 . The building will be fitted with a new roof, windows and doors, a new partition-wall between the two classrooms and the cracked and chipped walls will be rendered. 40 desks and benches and a new blackboard will be provided and the refurbished school will be fully rendered, helping to protect the clay bricks whilst creating a safe environment to learn in and to be proud of.

Challenge

The national illiteracy rate in Madagascar has reached 80% and the region Azafady works in (Anosy, SE) is one of the least developed parts of the country following decades of almost no intervention by the state or other service providers to maintain the education infrastructure. This school was built in 1968 and has not been renovated since. 1 in 2 children have never been to school and over 2 in 3 have not completed primary education. This situation contributes to perpetuating a poverty cycle.

Solution

The repair will improve the learning environment at the school increasing the quality of education available through the provision of desks, benches and resources. The separation of the two rooms will enable each class to work independently from one another. The repair of the roof will allow more time to be focused on learning rather than sweeping away water and this will also protect books and materials. Overall, students, teachers and the wider community will benefit for generations to come.

Long-Term Impact

Saving Tsagnoria School will provide children growing up in the surrounding communities a real chance to achieve at school for the first time in decades. If we can fund this project it is anticipated that no further repairs will be required for over 50 years. Over 1000 children will benefit over the next 10 years alone; increasing literacy rates and motivation in school attendance whilst generating positive feedbacks throughout the wider local area and restoring community pride.
