Summary

By way of photography and stories, we guide persons affected by tuberculosis to be change agents in their communities. Persons affected by TB are often left out of efforts to eradicate TB.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Nearly 2 million people around the world die from tuberculosis (TB) every year. This is a disease that is preventable and curable. Persons affected by TB rarely play an active role in the eradication of TB, nor have the root causes of this disease been holistically addressed from the community level. Poverty and stigma play an enormous role in TB prevention and treatment.

How will this project solve this problem?

This project trains persons directly impacted by TB to use cameras and reflections to document their health experience. TB Photovoice groups find common themes sharing their photos and stories, then create a plan of action for their community.

Potential Long Term Impact

The project will train groups, up to 15 participants, to engage in TB prevention and social change within their community and beyond. Groups will increase TB awareness/prevention efforts, elevate, and improve societal conditions.

Project Message

I was afraid to speak up about having TB and embarrassing my family. TB Photovoice taught me to be strong and to use my voice so others will not have to suffer as I did! I am stopping TB!
- Rachel Orduno, TB Photovoice participant
