About GlobalGiving.co.uk

Why we think GlobalGiving is important

We believe that grassroots nonprofit organisations are best placed to create sustainable community initiatives and achieve positive long-term social impact. We support them by connecting them to the resources they need to create change: access to our online fundraising platform, access to learning opportunities to build skills and knowledge, access to support through a growing network of volunteers and corporate partners.

GlobalGiving set out with two goals: first, to provide new giving options for people wanting a direct, transparent, high-impact giving experience; and second, to provide the vital access to resources that community organisations need. Using a technology platform we are able to provide a scalable solution, whilst also recognising that people and connections are critical to making this vision a success.

When you give a donation

You choose where you want your money to go, and we get it there, quickly and efficiently. And some final facts

GlobalGiving UK is a registered charity (no 1122823).

As a UK charity, we can claim Gift Aid if givers are UK taxpayers - even if your project or organisation is not registered in the UK. We can do this because of our due diligence process. All donations go through GlobalGiving UK, which is registered with the UK Charity Commission and we receive a nominal 10% fulfilment fee. This helps cover the cost of operating GlobalGiving UK, including money transfer fees, finding and vetting projects, providing training and support to project leaders, attracting donors and ensuring the site has up-to-date tools.

The majority of projects on GlobalGiving.co.uk are in the developing world, where a small amount of money goes a long way. We also support charities working in the UK.

Over £35 million has now been raised for 5,000 projects across the GlobalGiving websites. GlobalGiving.co.uk launched in the UK in September 2008, and the website has a growing base of over 300,000 annual unique visitors.

Our corporate partners are vital supporters for our network of non-profits, helping in diverse ways. Some examples include our global volunteer partners from Aegis Media and Standard Chartered; our non-profit learning partners Pearson; and generous corporate givers like the Guardian and Marriott Hotels.

GlobalGiving's success has also started to influence the UK's wider government policy towards overseas development and we are grateful to the Department for International Development for being a major funder of GlobalGiving UK's work, along with Nominet Trust, Joffe Charitable Trust, Esmee Fairbain and CAF Venturesome.

The GlobalGiving Story

In 1997, World Bank executives Mari Kuraishi and Dennis Whittle were asked to develop innovative ways to combat poverty. They created the World Bank's Development Marketplace, a first-of-its-kind event which people from around the world competed for World Bank funds. The event's success revealed the enormous potential of a global marketplace for philanthropy, and participants asked for a real marketplace that was open year round and operated virtually. Mari and Dennis saw the brilliance of this idea, left the World Bank and launched GlobalGiving in the USA. GlobalGiving UK was established in September 2008 to bring their successful model to a wider audience. Hear from Dennis Whittle, the founder about it all came about in a recent TEDx talk he gave to young entrepreneurs.
