Educational opportunities in Guatemala are slim - only 1 in 4 youth graduate from high school. Common Hope makes it possible for at-risk youth to stay in school & create a better life for themselves. We partner with children, families, and communities who want to participate in a process of development through programs in education, health care, and housing.
Educational opportunities are slim in Guatemala, one of Latin America's poorest nations. Only 1 in 3 youth finish junior high, and only 1 in 4 finish high school. Secondary education incurs many expenses for families struggling to get by. Youth must often quit school to find work and pay for immediate, pressing needs. Without a high school degree, low-wage, manual labor is the only option - closing the door to higher paid work that a few extra years of education would have provided.
Common Hope provides the support necessary for youth to graduate from high school, creating a better life for themselves and their families. We partner with children, families, and communities who want to participate in a process of development through programs in education, health care, and housing.
A high school degree can double a person's lifetime earning potential in a developing country like Guatemala. Instead of dropping out of school to pick coffee or clean houses, youth are going on to careers as teachers, accountants, architects, and social workers. These youth are becoming critical thinkers and leaders, agents of change in their communities.
