Turning Point Trust would like to feed 180 vulnerable children from 150 households in Kibera during the ongoing 9-week school holiday in November and December with an aim of reducing short term hunger among the children, and to keep them from engaging in crime and child labour in order to find food when schools are out.
Turning Point runs a school feeding programme that aims to increase school enrolment, class participation and reduce short term hunger as well as contribute to improved nutrition levels among children its education programmes in Kibera, Nairobi. The children depend on food offered by the school feeding programme. When schools close, many of them are forced to search for food outside their homes either by begging in the streets, working or searching for leftovers in waste bins.
The school holiday programme offers food items to 180 children from 150 families. The programme offers maize flour, rice, beans, soap, sugar and cooking oil to these households, enough to sustain them for 8-9 weeks during the holidays in November and December. The parents and guardians are expected to cook these foods at home for their children.
The programme contributes to reduced number of children dropping out of school or not returning to school after school holidays because they don't have to engage in crime, undignified activities or go out to look for food to feed themselves and their families. The programme also ensures that there is no nutrition loss among the children during the holidays. These contributes to an increase in the school completion rate in Kibera and more children will be on the right track towards life success.
