Challenge

The Kurram Tribal District in Pakistan has experienced repeated attacks from anti-government forces, which have severely damaged numerous buildings, including the all-girls elementary and middle school JEN plans to support. This school provides education for girls from 15 different villages, and currently has a short, non-functioning boundary wall that makes the students and faculty feel unsafe and uncomfortable, distracting them from learning and teaching.

Solution

JEN aims to construct a sturdier, taller, and functional boundary wall around the school to provide a safe and comfortable learning/ teaching environment for the students and faculty. Additionally, JEN will construct a school library and playground, including basic playground equipment such as swings, slides, a see-saw, etc. This will allow the girls to not only grow academically, but also mentally and physically become bright and well-rounded young women.

Long-Term Impact

Girls from 1st grade to 8th grade will be able to learn in a safe, educational, and inspiring environment, and ultimately be able to pursue higher education and employment in the field of their choice. This will also increase the literary rates for females in Pakistan, which are considerably lower than that of males, and decrease the gender gap that currently exists in Pakistan.
